The Gala apple is rapidly becoming one of the most popular apples in the United States (2006). Its popularity is based on the fact that it has a very sweet flavor, but a firm skin that crunches to the bite.

Another strength of the gala apple is its versatility. Not only is the gala apple good for eating, but it does well in salads, sauces and pies. Many apples that hold up well when baking aren't that good when eaten fresh, but the gala is an exception to this. The gala is easily recognized by thin yellow stripes on the light red skin.
